A lawsuit has been filed in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California against Instagram LLC, Meta Platforms, Inc. (formerly known as Facebook, Inc.), and Mark Zuckerberg. The lawsuit alleges that Instagram's product design, intentionally made addictive, and Meta's engagement-driven business model have created a public health crisis for pre-teen and teenage girls. The lawsuit seeks damages and a jury trial. The lawsuit claims that Instagram's algorithmic curation of content has led to a proliferation of harmful content for children, including content that promotes unrealistic beauty standards, disordered eating, and self-harm. Additionally, the lawsuit alleges that Instagram intentionally built features into its code based on principles of behavioral psychology that its employees learned at the Persuasive Technology Lab at Stanford, and that minors are particularly susceptible to these techniques.
