How the class action lawsuit tracker works

The class action lawsuit tracker follows one rule: a status is only stated when a court record supports it. Every entry names the court and docket number, which anyone can use to look up the case. The date shown is the day the docket was last read, and the status label is chosen from what that docket shows. Where a case has been stayed, transferred or merged into a larger proceeding, the entry says so and says where the claims continue.

The labels are plain. Pending means the case is open and no judgment or approved settlement has been entered. Class certified means the judge has decided the case may go forward on behalf of a defined group. Stayed means the court has paused the case, usually because the claims proceed in another case.

What a class action lawsuit status can and cannot tell a reader

The status of a class action lawsuit is a snapshot, and the active class action lawsuits listed above are no exception. A motion to dismiss can be decided within weeks or sit for months, and a certified class can still end without a payment. An active case is not a prediction, and a company being named in a complaint is not a finding that it did anything wrong. The entries describe what plaintiffs allege and what the court has done, and they keep those two things apart.

For readers who ask whether they are covered by a case, the answer sits in the class definition, which is quoted or summarized on each page. For the general rules, see what a class action lawsuit is and how it works, including eligibility, opt-outs and claims.

The class action lawsuit timeline

Most class actions pass through the same stages, and the tracker's labels follow them.

  1. FiledA named plaintiff files a complaint and defines the class.
  2. TestedThe defendant moves to dismiss; the court decides if the claim can proceed.
  3. CertifiedThe court decides whether the case can proceed for the whole group.
  4. ResolvedSettlement, judgment or dismissal, then notice and claims if money is paid.

Why dates and docket numbers matter

News stories about class actions age quickly. A deadline reported in one month may have passed by the next, and a case reported as settled may only have reached a proposed settlement that the court has yet to approve. The docket number is the stable handle. With it, a reader can open the public docket for a federal case and see each filing in order, from the complaint to the latest order.

The tracker also reports what it could not confirm. When a case lives in a state court whose dockets were not available, or when the entries retrieved stop before a ruling, the page says so and the status is written as the last known one.

How the cases are grouped by topic

The topic list in the index groups the tracker's entries by what the dispute is about. Investor suits over stock sit under Securities and are gathered on the securities class action lawsuits hub: Eargo, Silverback Therapeutics and Revance Therapeutics. Consumer protection holds the Ticketmaster fee litigation and the Black Rifle Coffee labelling case, both of which have a nationwide or proposed class. NFT and crypto holds Yuga Labs and the FTX promoter claims, where the first question is whether the asset was a security at all.

Not everything on the tracker is a class action. The State of Ohio's suit over the East Palestine derailment is a government action, and two civil rights entries and a personal injury entry are single-plaintiff cases listed for reference. The LGBTQ hub collects seven federal cases, most of them not class actions, under Civil rights. Each of those pages says in its first paragraph what kind of case it is.

Reading a case page

Every case page starts with the status in dated words and a table of the court, docket number, judge and filing date. Docket entry numbers quoted in the text, such as entry 126 in the Eargo case, match the numbering on the linked court record, so a reader can open that entry and compare it with the summary.

Sources are listed at the bottom of each page, with the court record first and any administrator or press coverage after it. Where the record and a news report disagree, the page follows the record and says which one it used.

Questions about the tracker

What is a class action lawsuit tracker?

A list of class action lawsuits with the court, the docket number, the current status and the date it was last checked, so a reader can see where a case stands without reading the docket.

How are active class action lawsuits chosen for the tracker?

Entries are cases against well-known companies where the public docket can be checked, with a clear claim and a date for the last check. A case without a verifiable status is left out.

Does appearing on the tracker mean a company did something wrong?

No. A class action begins with allegations. Only a judgment or an approved settlement resolves them, and a settlement usually states that the defendant denies liability.

Can I join a class action lawsuit from this site?

No. The tracker reports on cases. Membership in a class is set by the court, and any claim form comes from the court-approved administrator in the official notice.

How current is the status of each class action?

Each entry shows the date its docket was last checked. Dockets move, so the court record is the authority for anything newer.
